Stitch guide

Increases

Yarn over (YO) Knit one stitch, then bring yarn over the right needle, to the front, then knit the next stitch as usual, making one extra stitch on the right needle and causing a small hole in the fabric.

M1 Use the tip of the right needle to lift the yarn running between the last knitted stitch on the right needle and the next stitch to be knitted on the left needle. Insert the tip of the left needle through the front of the stitch on the right needle from left to right; knit the lifted stitch to make one.

Suspended cast off

Knit first two sts onto the right needle as usual. *With the left needle, lift the first st over the second as if to cast it off, but keep it on the left needle instead of dropping it. Now knit the second st on the left needle, and then drop both first and second sts off the left needle together. Repeat from *.

Twisted cord

Cut two 10 m lengths of embroidery thread from two different skeins. With help from a friend, fold the two lengths in half over a pencil. One person holds the ends and the other twists the pencil like a jar lid, turning it until the cord has twisted along its length. Now bring the two ends together, keeping the cord taut; it will begin to curl in on itself to form the twists in the cord. Use your fingers to smooth the twists. Knot each end firmly, carefully snipping off the folds for a bit of fringe.

Decreases

Slip, slip, knit (ssk)Slip two sts knitwise, one at a time, from the left needle to the right needle. Slide the tip of left needle through the front of the two sts and knit them together. Decreases 1 st.

Three-needle cast off

Bring together two pieces of knitting on separate needles, right sides facing. The near needle is the 'front' needle, and the other is the 'back' needle. Insert tip of a third needle knitwise through both the first st on front needle and the first st on the back needle. Knit the two together onto the third needle. Repeat the same manoeuvre on the next st on the front and back needles, giving you two sts on the right needle. Now cast off 1 st from the right needle in the usual manner, lifting the first stitch and dropping it over the second. Continue this way, knitting two together off the paired needles and casting sts off right needle, until only one st remains on right needle. Break yarn and pull it out through the last st.

Cables

c8b Place the next 4 stitches onto the cable needle and hold them at the back of your work. Knit the next 4 stitches from the left hand needle, then knit the 4 stitches from the cable needle.

Fringes

Cut a piece of cardboard to the width you want your fringe to be. Wind the yarn around the cardboard lots of times—how many is up to you. Wind more for thicker fringes, less for thinner ones. Cut the yarn along one edge of the cardboard to give you lots of strands the same length. To attach, fold strands in half and pull the fold through the hem, creating a small loop. Draw the ends of the fringe through the loop and pull tight to secure. Trim with scissors to neaten the edge.
