Knitting Over the Edge follows on the heels of Nicky Epstein's popular 2004 publication Knitting On the Edge. Like its predecessor, it contains photographs and written instructions for 350 decorative borders, including an extensive array of unusual ribs, variations on I-cord, colourwork (novelty intarsia, animal 'prints'), appliquéd flowers, knitted knots and whimsical dangling do-dads.
While many of the border patterns in Knitting Over the Edge are more complicated than those found in the previous book, they are also more inspired and more inspiring. Epstein's written directions are clear and easy to follow, but those who prefer charts will be disappointed by their absence. Designs for an intarsia pullover, an intriguingly fringed scarf, a rose-studded capelet, a floral wrap, and a tufted, ball-trimmed coat complete the book while also encouraging reader-knitters to try the different types of edgings featured within.
As a reference tool Knitting Over the Edge will please budding designers as well as those interested in personalising commercial patterns by altering the finishing touches. Although many of the techniques are advanced, beginners and all knitters who enjoy a challenge will find much to learn by trying their hand at knitting over the edge.
